Launceston is a centre for exploration Perhaps Launceston is the rural capital of Tasmania, whereas Hobart has been a deep port city with the backing of 200 years of administrative incomes from Government. Launceston has been therefore more centred on private wealth and many of Tasmanias' richest farmlands, probably actually some of Australias best farmland surrounds the greater Launceston area. I refer to the farms of the Nile valley, Cressy, and west to Deloraine and perhaps even as far as the prime chocolate cropping soils as far afield as Latrobe. Either way it's all so beautiful and you'll spend many days following inquisitive locals too, chasing down the best of our local history. You could drive a now disused International Formula One racetrack at Longford, Check out the fabulous industrial museum exhibit at the Inveresk Railyards, Admire the quaintness of immaculate villages at Evandale, Ross and Longford, all within an hour drive, and see a working Gold mine at Beaconsfield. Many vineyards offer cellar door tastings and sales, you can even cruise there by launch. Launch for lunch!, what fun. Remember the famous Launceston Gorge, one of top[ ten destinations and try out the suspension bridge or there cable car or both. Tasmanias first hydro electric station at Trevallyn, or go the mouth of the Tamar to Beauty Point and see a seahorse farm and research facility. Check out the monkeys in City Park, as fine display of classic cars across the road, and if your timing is good see an AFL footy match at York Park, or once a year the Targa Tasmania, makes the best of some of the local roadways. |
